Description

A straightforward chocolate layer cake with a moist, fudgy crumb, perfect for home bakers and gatherings.


Ingredients

  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 1/2 cup salted caramel sauce (for filling)
  • 2 cups chocolate fudge frosting
  • Extra caramel sauce (for topping)


Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. Combine flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt in a large bowl. Whisk to break up clumps.
  3. Add eggs, milk, oil, and vanilla to the dry ingredients and mix until well combined, avoiding overmixing.
  4. Gradually stir in boiling water until the batter is smooth; it will be thin.
  5. Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans.
  6. Bake for 30-35 minutes until a toothpick comes out clean.
  7. Cool cakes for 10 minutes in the pans, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
  8. Assemble by placing one cake layer on a serving plate, spreading with salted caramel sauce, and topping with the second layer.
  9. Frost the top and sides with chocolate fudge frosting.
  10. Drizzle additional caramel sauce on top if desired.
