Description

A simple and quick dessert made with stale bread soaked in a creamy custard, baked to golden perfection.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups of bread cubes
  • 2 cups of milk
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 cup of sugar
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon of salt
  • Caramel sauce (for serving)
  • Ice cream (for serving)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Whisk together the eggs, milk, sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and salt until well combined.
  3. Place the bread cubes in a greased baking dish and pour the custard mixture over the bread, ensuring all pieces are soaked.
  4. Let it sit for about 10-15 minutes to absorb the custard.
  5. Bake in the preheated oven for 45-50 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and a knife inserted in the center comes out clean.
  6. Serve warm topped with caramel sauce or ice cream.

Notes

Preheating gives even bake and a nice crust. Whisking well mixes sugar into the liquid so it melts and sweetens evenly. Letting the bread sit helps the center cook through without drying. Check with a knife to avoid underbaked custard.
