Description

A comforting and nostalgic British meat pie filled with ground beef and hearty vegetables, all encased in a flaky crust.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound (450g) ground beef
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 small carrot, diced
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup (120ml) beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon ground black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon dried thyme
  • 2 (9-inch) unbaked pie crusts (homemade or store-bought)
  • 1 egg (for egg wash)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).
  2. Fit one crust into a 9-inch pie plate, allowing the edges to overhang.
  3. In a large skillet over medium heat, brown the ground beef, breaking it up as it cooks.
  4. Add the chopped onion, minced garlic, and diced carrot, cooking until the onions are translucent.
  5. Sprinkle in the flour and stir, then slowly pour in the beef broth and add Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper, and thyme.
  6. Simmer for about 5 minutes, allowing flavors to combine.
  7. Let the mixture cool slightly, then pour it into the prepared pie crust.
  8. Cover with the second pie crust, crimp edges, and cut slits on top to vent.
  9. Brush the top with the beaten egg.
  10. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes until golden brown, covering the edges with foil if browning too quickly.
  11. Let it rest for 10 minutes before slicing.

Notes

Serve with steamed peas or a fresh salad for a delightful meal.
